English Language Services

LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)

The objective of the LINC program is to provide quality, settlement-based English language training to newcomers to Canada. LINC facilitates the social, cultural, and economic adaptation of refugees and immigrants, so they may become participating members of society as quickly as possible.

The Regina Open Door Society (RODS) LINC program excels with professional classroom instruction and quality childcare services. The highly trained, experienced and accredited teaching staff uses curriculum guidelines aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The Child Care Centre offers preschoolers (6 months - Kindergarten) a creative, caring and safe learning environment. Bus passes are available from the front desk at 1855 Smith St.

LINC classes at RODS are available to permanent residents. Daytime classes are offered Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and evening classes are held Monday - Thursday from 6:30 p.m. – 8:45 p.m.  Classes are held at 1855 Smith Street, 2332 11th Avenue and 400-2314 11th Avenue.

Everyone interested in attending LINC must begin with an assessment to determine their English language level. The results of their assessment will be used to place them in a class appropriate to their language learning needs. Students scoring CLB level 3 and lower are eligible to participate in classes held at RODS.  Those scoring CLB  and higher will be referred to SIAST.  Learners scoring at CLB 3 and 4 have the choice to study at RODS or SIAST.  LINC Home Study is also available to permanent residents, with a minimum CLB 2 score, who are unable to attend classes.

After assessments have been completed, students desiring to study English at RODS must register for classes at the Newcomer Welcome Centre.  The staff will make a copy of their Assessment Certificate and forward it to LINC.  The learner will then be placed on the waitlist - daytime, evening or LINC Home Study as indicated by the student.  They will be contacted as soon as there is a spot available for them in an appropriate class.  The current wait time for day classes is approximately 3-4 months.  Those needing child care or having other special needs may need to wait longer.
