Meet M?Thu Hser Lah - 2012 Newcomers Bursary Winner
I am M’thu Hser Lah and I moved to Canada in 2007. I arrived here September 2007. I am presently a grade twelve student at Balfour Collegiate and plan to further my education. At Balfour Collegiate, the teachers are very nice and I have learned how to respect them and other people. I have spent five years at Balfour Collegiate as I learned to speak English. I will graduate this June and look forward to pursuing an education in welding.
After I receive my grade twelve diploma, I would like to go to SIAST to earn a welder’s certificate for my welding career. This in my long term goal. I have learned to handle many difficult challenges such as learning English and have spent time working a part time job. This income I have earned has allowed my family and I to pay rent and put food on the table. It is not enough to pay for my schooling at SIAST. Therefore, I am looking to obtain funding.
Once high shcool is done, I have decided to work full time. Hopefully, this will contribute some money to my post secondary education but it will not be enough. Currently, I work at Pasta Prima Restaurant on South Albert Street in Regina. I have been working there since April 2008. This has been a good job but not one I see as a career. I would like to work with welding company because I think it will be better than working in a restaurant. It is difficult to earn good money to support myself and family. Therfore, I have decided to go to SIAST to achieve my future occupation.
For volunteer experience, I have had three experiences in community service. From August 2007 to present, I have been involved in the Regina Takraw volunteer club, Soul Harbour Gym, the YMCA and a Senior’s Group.
I greatly appreciation the opportunity to apply for the Newcomer Bursary. Thank you for this award.
