The Essential Skills (In-person)

Do you know which skills are the most important to list on your resume? Essential skills are the skills that people need for learning work and life. They are used in the community and the workplace, in different forms and at different levels of complexity. The Government of Canada, along with other national and international organizations, have identified nine “essential skills” that employers look for when considering who to hire. By developing these essential skills, you will be able to increase your career potential and adapt to the ever-changing workforce.  

The nine essential skills are reading, document Use, writing, and numeracy, communication, working with others, continuous learning, critical thinking, and digital literacy 

What will you learn? 

This workshop explores the nine essential skills in-depth, and how they can support your personal and professional growth. Topics include: 

  • What are essential skills? 
  • Understanding the competency model & the stages of skill development 
  • Applying the nine essential skills in the workplace 
  • Demonstrating the essential skills on a resume and in an interview 
  • Using essential skills to be an assertive employee 

When you finish this workshop, you will 

  • Develop a greater understanding of the nine essential skills 
  • Be able to identify personal aptitudes and core strengths 
  • Become a better employee for the Canadian workforce.
