Giancarlo’s Story: Embracing Opportunities and Achieving Success in Canada
Giancarlo Castro’s arrival in Regina was both exciting and overwhelming. He came to Regina in December 2023 from Peru. He had a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering and eight years of job experience in customer service, quality assurance, and engineering sectors. He faced language barriers, cultural adjustments, and the daunting task of finding employment. However, he knew that the right career guidance could turn his dreams into reality.
Giancarlo got connected with the Regina Open Door Society (RODS), a non-profit organization committed to assisting newcomers in their settlement needs in a new country. He booked an appointment to see an employment counsellor and met his counsellor, who eventually became his guiding light.
In his first meeting with his employment counsellor, Giancarlo’s aspirations, skills, and experience were discussed. The counsellor and Giancarlo crafted a personalized career plan charting his long-term and short-term career plans. Giancarlo attended workshops on resume building, interview techniques, and workplace etiquette, as recommended by his counsellor. He gained confidence and learned how to navigate the Canadian job market. Armed with a tailored resume that matched the job description and newly acquired interview skills, he started applying for positions in the automotive industry. His passion for cars led him to explore opportunities at Ford and related companies.
Giancarlo’s dedication paid off soon. He secured an interview at Bennett Dunlop Ford, a reputable car dealership in Regina. His heart was racing as he sat across from the hiring manager, answering questions. However, he could draw insight from the counselling session and interview skill workshop to answer the challenging questions confidently and showcase his genuine interest in the automotive field. He could also highlight on transferable and updated skills to his advantage during the interview.
The much-awaited call finally came—a job offer! Giancarlo Castro was hired as a Collision Advisor at Bennett Dunlop Ford. His role involved assisting customers with collision repairs, ensuring smooth interactions, and providing exceptional service. Giancarlo’s dedication and commitment is much appreciated by his colleagues and clients. The encouragement, practical advice and support in updating his skills from his employment counsellor and employment readiness workshops fueled his determination and helped him thrive in his role, helping Ford customers navigate collision-related challenges.
Giancarlo’s advice to newcomers: “It is essential for newcomers to enroll in newcomer settlement services organizations like RODS and receive help, guidance and support to get ready for the job market in Canada through their counselling sessions, employment readiness workshops and financial assistance for certifications.”
