WES Credential Evaluation vs. WES Gateway: Which Is Right for You?

When it comes to pursuing educational and career opportunities in Canada, having your academic credentials recognized is a critical step. World Education Services (WES) is a widely recognized organization that evaluates academic credentials from around the world to assist individuals in their pursuit of academic and professional goals in Canada. In this blog post, we will compare two key offerings from WES: the WES Credential Evaluation program and the WES Gateway program, shedding light on their differences and benefits.

 WES Credential Evaluation Program

The WES Credential Evaluation program is designed to assess academic credentials from over 48,000 institutions in 203 countries and territories worldwide. These evaluations are recognized and respected by numerous academic institutions, licensing bodies, and employers throughout Canada. Here are two primary types of evaluations offered:

  1. Course-by-Course Evaluation: Ideal for individuals seeking transfer and graduate admissions, as well as those applying for licensing and certification (except for Certified Public Accountants). WES also offers the Course-by-Course International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP), which includes the storage of verified transcripts along with the evaluation report. This package provides convenience for future document submission and even offers a WES digital badge for showcasing your verified credentials on professional platforms like LinkedIn.
  2. Document-by-Document Evaluation: This option is suitable for freshman admissions where advanced standing or transfer credit is not expected, as well as for employment applications and Canadian immigration submissions. Similar to the Course-by-Course evaluation, you can choose the Document-by-Document International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) to store your verified transcripts for future use.

The processing time for these evaluations can vary, so it’s essential to refer to WES’s official website for current processing times.

WES Gateway Program

The WES Gateway Program serves a unique purpose. It evaluates the educational credentials of individuals who face challenges in providing adequate proof of their academic achievements due to adverse circumstances in their country of education.

To be eligible, participants must be from countries such as Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

WES collaborates with referral partners, including Employment Services at Regina Open Door Society, to identify qualified individuals for the WES Gateway Program. These referral organizations confirm eligibility, submit documents for evaluation, and provide additional information. One notable advantage of this program is that you don’t have to be a client of Employment Services to seek assistance for your WES Gateway application.

Overall, both the WES Credential Evaluation program and the WES Gateway program play crucial roles in helping individuals with foreign academic credentials navigate the Canadian educational and professional landscape. While the former is a versatile tool for assessing academic qualifications from around the world, the latter serves as a lifeline for those who face challenges due to adverse circumstances. Regardless of your situation, these programs are valuable resources in your journey to success in Canada.
