Rebuilding a Career with Confidence – Muhammad Asghar Journey to Success
When Muhammad Asghar Haris arrived in Regina from Pakistan in April 2024, he brought more than 20 years of experience in human resources, training, organizational development and administration. Having worked with leading organizations in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, he was excited to begin a new chapter in Canada.
Like many skilled newcomers, however, Muhammad soon discovered that continuing a professional career in a new country came with unique challenges.
Despite his extensive international experience, Muhammad faced the common hurdle of needing Canadian work experience, local references and a deeper understanding of Canadian workplace culture. His job search required persistence, adaptability and continuous learning. While pursuing opportunities in human resources, he accepted roles that helped him gain Canadian experience and remained focused on his long-term career goals.

Through the Regina Open Door Society’s Mentorship Program, Muhammad received personalized guidance that helped him better understand the Canadian labour market and workplace expectations. His mentor shared valuable insights into Canadian workplace culture, hiring practices, networking and employer expectations. The mentorship experience, combined with career guidance and networking opportunities, helped Muhammad strengthen his job search skills, expand his professional network and build confidence as he navigated his career journey.
Muhammad also gave back to the community while building connections and experience in Regina. He volunteered as a Conversation Circle Volunteer with RODS, helping fellow newcomers strengthen their English communication skills while continuing to develop his own leadership and communication abilities. He also volunteered with RODS’ Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, helping community members access free support to complete their income tax returns.
Today, Muhammad is proud to work as a People Lead at Walmart Canada, where he supports recruitment, onboarding, associate engagement, HR administration, compliance and training. His role allows him to apply his extensive HR expertise while continuing to grow within the Canadian workplace.
Reflecting on his journey, Muhammad credits perseverance, lifelong learning and the support he received through the Regina Open Door Society with helping him reach this important milestone.
“The mentorship program gave me a much better understanding of the Canadian workplace and job market. The guidance, encouragement and practical advice I received helped me build confidence and prepare for success. Every workshop, networking opportunity and conversation brought me one step closer to my career goals.”
His advice to other newcomers is simple: Never give up. Continue learning, seek feedback, build your network, volunteer when possible and make full use of community resources. Every experience can bring you closer to your goals.
Muhammad’s story is a reminder that with determination, meaningful connections and the right support, skilled newcomers can continue building their careers and thrive in Canada.
The Regina Open Door Society extends its sincere gratitude to RBC for its generous support of the Mentorship Program. Through RBC’s investment, skilled newcomers like Muhammad can access mentorship, build meaningful professional connections, gain a deeper understanding of the Canadian workplace and take important steps toward continuing their careers in Canada.
