Navigating the Job Market as a Newcomer: Dulce’s Story of Determination
Moving to a new country comes with big challenges—especially when it comes to rebuilding a career. When Dulce Islas Lee arrived in Regina in 2022, she knew she had to start over. With a background in graphic design and editorial work, she faced the all-too-common hurdles of resume adaptation, job applications, and a lack of Canadian experience.
Finding the Right Support
Determined to succeed, Dulce didn’t give up. She took a proactive approach by:
- Hiring a career consultant to refine her job search strategy.
- Working with an English tutor to strengthen her language skills.
- Enrolling in the English for Employment (E4E) program at Regina Open Door Society (RODS).
“RODS was a life changer,” Dulce says. “I gained confidence, made friends, and learned how to navigate Canadian workplaces.”
Through RODS, Dulce also had the chance to job shadow, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a professional setting.
Turning Challenges Into Opportunities
Her perseverance paid off. She first landed a role as an Administrative Assistant, but her true passion was in editorial work. When an opportunity opened at University of Regina Press, she applied—but wasn’t selected.
Instead of feeling discouraged, Dulce stayed proactive. She kept in touch with the director, showed her enthusiasm, and when another role became available, she got the job!
Now, Dulce is working in research, fact-checking, and editing, gaining the experience she needs to become an editor one day.
Dulce’s Advice for Newcomers
Her journey wasn’t always easy, but Dulce believes patience, persistence, and flexibility make all the difference. Here’s her advice for others starting fresh in Canada:
- Improve your English—strong communication skills open doors.
- Use resources like RODS—they can provide support and guidance.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help—mentorship and networking can lead to new opportunities.
- Consider a survival job—it helps build Canadian experience and references.
- Stay persistent—your determination will take you far!
